October 2015 Local Artist of the Month

Blue Stallion Brewing is proud to feature Dawna Scripps as our Local Artist of the Month for October 2015. Dawna was born in Texas and was raised all over. She has a studio at The Artists’ Attic on the 4th floor of The Square in downtown Lexington.

From the Artist:

DawnaScripps02I am a self taught artist, specializing in painting happy! I love to paint city scenes of places that make me feel welcome, festive, creative, and full of joy. My scenes may not look exactly like the place I paint, but I like to think about what’s inside the bricks and mortar, and use that to fill the space on my canvas. That, along with character (characters) and charm that many places in Lexington exude. Take a few minutes to look at the details. You never know what you might find. Whatever you discover, I hope it makes you smile.

You can reach Dawna Scripps on her website, Whimsythings.net, or via email at dawna@whimsythings.net.

From the Artist:

I created this acrylic on canvas series specifically for Blue Stallion Brewing for the “Local ARyist of the Month” spotlight. When I found out that my work was going to be here, I immediately began thinking about color in Sepia.

There is something extremely authentic about beer and the art of brewing.

Beer is something that feels like home to most of us.
It has a history with us;
it’s a comfort as well as a luxury.
It’s timeless.
When fads have come and gone, beer has sustained it’s position.
It is steadfast and true.
It’s like that old friend that knows you, even after years have passed.

I want to honor the tradition of local brewing through subject matter that felt Genuine, Real and a part of our past. So I decided to paint a “Prohibition/Repeal Day” themed series and it was a great experience.

Sepia appears as brown and white, but if you look closely you can find blues, dark purples, creams, yellows and hints of orange in this unique color mix.

I hope you enjoy viewing ot as much as I did creating it. Cheers!

January 2014 Local Artist of the Month

Blue Stallion Brewing is proud to feature Stephen Wiggins as our Local Artist of the Month for January 2014. Stephen grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and went to Lafayette High school where he graduated in 1999. He then attended College at Berea in Berea, Kentucky before transferring to the University of Kentucky in the Fall of 2002 and finishing his BA in Studio Art in 2005.

Stephen’s concentration of art mainly falls in the painting, printmaking and drawing realm. Below is his artist statement:

[quote align=”center” color=”#999999″]

In my work I focus strongly on the abstract interpretation of thoughts and feelings, but not so much in a way that alienates the audience, but invites them in and allows them to ask questions. A dialogue is created so that the people that view the work can understand more about me, the artist and how art can be used to process pain. My pieces always leave me very vulnerable as I leave everyone on the canvas, paper or whatever medium is presented. The colors I choose are bright, vivid, and lifelike. These color choices invite people in and create a dialogue between the artist and the audience. The bright color choices also represent the transformation of a negative experience into a positive one. The marks I choose to make reflect an therapeutic, meditative and soothing focus that helps to calm my mind.

My concentration lies mainly in acrylic and oil paintings, silkscreen, lino-cut, monotype and stone lithography prints. I have also been able to expand into the mixed media concentration with staple drawings. My work over the years shows growth and the main purpose behind that is to inspire my audience and to let them know that you are created to create and that in that process we can have a dialogue that invites and not isolates.

November 2013 Local Artist of the Month

Blue Stallion Brewing is proud to feature Kevin Talley as our Local Artist of the Month for November 2013. Kevin is a photographer who lives and works in Louisville, KY. His photography focuses on horses, portraits and weddings. Some of his work involving horses is on display in the Blue Stallion taproom.

Here’s a little more about Kevin in his own words:

[quote align=”center” color=”#999999″]

Photography for me is much more then a profession or hobby, it is in fact my passion and love. Very few times you find me without a camera nearby as you never know when you might just capture the perfect image.

Working in Miami, Los Angeles, and my hometown of Louisville KY, in the modeling industry, I got to work with the best photographers in the business. In 2004 I met and worked with world renowned photographer John Russo in Los Angeles. Working with John over the last several years, I learned a great deal of how I shoot today. Always keeping my work at a high and professional level, I’m still always out to learn more and share my experience with other photographers.
